Copyright & Takedown

Last updated: October 2, 2026

Root & Whole collects short passages from books, speeches and scriptures, each with its author and source. We try to get the wording and the credit right, and we try to respect the rights of the people who wrote and translated these words.

How we choose what to publish

• Most passages come from works that are in the public domain. We also check the translation, because a translation can have its own copyright even when the original does not.
• For authors whose work is still under copyright, we quote only a single sentence or two, always with the author's name and the title of the work.
• We check each passage against a primary source and keep a record of where it came from. If a quotation cannot be confirmed, we do not publish it.

If you think something should be changed

If you are a rights holder, or you believe a passage is misquoted, misattributed, or should not appear here, please email [email protected] with:

• the web address (URL) of the page, or the quote's number (for example Z-000123);
• what the problem is, and, if you are the rights holder, how we can verify that;
• your name and a way to contact you.

We will reply within two business days. If the request is reasonable we will remove the passage or correct it, usually the same day while we look into it.

Images

Images shown with quotes are either made by us or used with permission or under a licence that allows it. If you recognise one of your images here without permission, write to the same address and we will take it down.
